Akebia quinata grows to 10 m (30 ft) or more in height and has compound leaves with five leaflets. The flowers are clustered in racemes and are chocolate-scented, with three or four sepals. The fruits are sausage-shaped pods which contain edible pulp.

Plants are evergreen in mild winters. Since the chocolate vine growth rate is so fast, it makes an excellent cover for arbors, trellises, pergolas or fences.

Allagoptera arenaria, Seashore Palm, Cocos Arenaria

Click to see full-size image Allagoptera arenaria
Family: Arecaceae / Palmae
Seashore Palm, Cocos Arenaria
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterModerate waterPalm or palm-likeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Seashore palm - restinga, a low, coastal scrub, and sand dunes near the beach are the native habitat of this attractive, small, bushy palm in southeastern Brazil. Its forking trunk usually grows underground, rarely upright and visible. The elegantly arching, bushy leaves are dark gray-green above and silvery-waxy below and the fruits are borne in curious, dense clusters on the tip of long, upright stalks. While the seeds tend to be somewhat erratic to germinate and seedling growth is fairly slow, the plants speed up considerably after a couple of years. The Restinga Palm prefers a sunny spot in sandy soil and will adapt to any tropical and subtropical climate. It is very resistant wind and salt and will look its best even under full coastal exposure. See picture.

Very attractive ever-blooming shrub with bright yellow trumpet-like flowers. Night-scented flowers year-round. Prickly seed pods follow the flowers with winged seeds that fly about when the pod dries and breaks open. Allamanda is perennial in tropical climates and may be treated as an annual or brought inside during cold weather and replanted after danger of frost. The plant has milky sap and is considered poisonous; all parts are highly cathartic (hence the botanical name). Grows well in most soils, but becomes chlorotic in very alkaline conditions. In areas where there is seasonal change, keep fairly dry during winter and prune in spring before growth begins. It may be desirable to prune annually in any case to control for size.
