Adenium sp., commonly known as Desert Rose, refers to a group of succulent shrubs and small trees in the Apocynaceae family native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Plants develop a swollen caudex and thickened stems that store water, supporting a compact to spreading crown typically 2 to 6 ft tall in cultivation. Leaves are simple and variable in size and shape, often clustered near the tips of branches. Flowers are showy and funnel-shaped, appearing in a wide range of colors including pink, red, white, and bi-color forms, often with contrasting throats.

This group prefers full sun, excellent drainage, and a fast-draining, mineral-based soil. Water moderately during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between applications, and reduce watering during dormancy. Growth rate is moderate in warm conditions. Cold tolerance is limited, with damage likely below 40F; best suited to USDA Zones 10 to 11. Adenium species are well suited to container growing, where drainage and winter protection can be carefully controlled.See other exotic species of Adenium, photo gallery of exotic varieties and Thai Adeniums - milti-colored, multi-grafted.

See article about Adenium.

These adenium hybrids are quite unnique as they have unusual color for Adenium - yellow. Original species of Adenium were limited by pink, white, and red colors and shades. Just a few years ago, yellow hybrids were selected in Thailand and at first were considered a myth. Now we have them, and every year more and more yellow hybrids appear on the market.

Adeniums have many spectacular hybrids. The basic culture is very similar to orchids. A small pot with excellent drainage is a must. Adeniums do not like both over-watering or drying-out. There is a little secret of how to create a weird shape of the base: lift the plant a bit every time you re-pot the plant, so that the upper part of roots will be a little exposed. The plant will form more roots that will go down. To make your plant develop a large swollen base/trunk, you'll need a good quality fertilizer. Fetilizer requirement for swelling up trunks is also used to increase flowering. It shouldnt be too hight in nitrogen, the middle number should be the highest. Never apply fertilizer directly on roots and do not liquid feed when a plant is thirsty: always water first slightly to avoid root burn and leaf drop. Do not wet leaves. Adeniums need lots of light for heavy flowering. Most hybrids and species start blooming in the spring when the conditions are warm and days get longer, and continue blooming through the fall and winter in warmer climates. Adeniums like a neutral to hard water. Acidic water tends to sour the soil too fast and may cause root rot. Water plants preferably in the early morning, and allow them to drink up throughout the day. Watering can be done daily to every few days. Never allow your plants to sit in a saucer of water, but don't let them to dry out too often - this causes adeniums to go into early dormancy.

Yellow adeniums are very valuable because many of them have light fragrance.

The first double flowered variety of Adenium that we obtained was bright red color. After growing simple pink varieties, it seemed the most exotic flower. Soon enough other colors were hybridized and white and pink double flowers came to the market. Within just a year or two after that, all the sudden all kinds of colors appeared, including striped, dotted, spotted... The rainbow of hybrid adeniums nowadays is unbelievable!

Botanical names: Adenocalymna comosum, Bignonia comosa

Common name: Yellow Trumpet Vine

Family: Bignoniaceae

Origin: South America

USDA Plant Hardiness MapVine or creeper plantSemi-shadeFull sunWatering: Regular. Let topsoil dry slightlyYellow, orange flowers

Adenocalymna comosum (Yellow Trumpet Vine) is a creeper native to South America that is renowned for its beautiful yellow and orange flowers. It thrives in full sun or semi-shade and requires regular water to remain healthy. It is suitable for growing in USDA Zones 9-11, making it a great option for gardeners living in mild climates.

Yellow Trumpet Vine is an evergreen vine and needs support to grow on, such as trellis or wire. Its leaves are small, lanceolate and arranged in opposite pairs. It flowers in early spring producing many long tubular yellow or orange flowers, grouped in terminal plume-like inflorescences. The flowers open successively and display a steady flowering state over several weeks.

If you are growing the Yellow Trumpet Vine in a pot, then it is best to use a well-draining soil with a slow-release fertiliser. In cooler climates, it is best to move the pot indoors in winter to provide protection from frost. To encourage healthy growth and flowering, deadhead any faded flowers, and prune the plant if it gets too large or leggy. A yearly prune will also help to keep the plant from becoming unruly.

With its beautiful flowers, Adenocalymna comosum is a great addition to any garden. With its easy-care requirements and ability to thrive in mild climates, the Yellow Trumpet Vine can be a real showstopper in any outdoor space.

Adiantum peruvianum (Silver Dollar) with light green rounded foliage attached to dark wiry slender stems

Botanical name: Adiantum peruvianum

Common name: Silver Dollar

Family: Pteridaceae

Origin: South America

USDA Plant Hardiness MapSmall plant 2-5 ftSemi-shadeFull sunWatering: Moderate. Water when top soil feels dryOrnamental foliage

Adiantum peruvianum, commonly known as the Silver Dollar plant, is a popular house plant native to South America. It is a robust small shrub that grows between two and five feet tall, with ornamental foliage and a showy, tropical look.

Adiantum peruvianum is best suited to full sun, semi-shade and moderate water. This plant thrives in areas with high humidity and lots of air movement. It is hardy in USDA Zone 9-11 and can also be grown in a pot in colder regions.

For indoor growing, Adiantum peruvianum needs bright, indirect light, with the occasional mid-day sun. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy, with monthly fertilizer and regular misting. When the plant is in its dormant winter stage, it is best to water only when the soil is completely dry. Be sure to keep it away from cold drafts or areas with low humidity.

Outdoors, Adiantum peruvianum can be planted in well-drained soil, with partial sun. Also, be sure to keep the soil evenly moist and supplement with fertilizer every two or three months during the growing season. If you live in a cold region, it is best to bring the plant in during the winter and protect it from frost.

Overall, Adiantum peruvianum is an easy to care for plant that can add a tropical flair to your home or garden. With some TLC, it will produce vibrant foliage, adding character and interest to any room.

They range in sizes from a very tiny 6 inches, to more than 10 feet in height and 6 feet in diameter. Their foliage colors vary from lime green, yellow, red, burgundy, and black, and incorporates many patterns, spots, stripes, bands, silvering, shadings, and blotches. These patterns often vary form the top of the leaf to the bottom of it. The Aechmea family has large inflorescence and brightly colored, long lasting bracts that holds the magnitude of tiny flowers. Often the colorful berry-like fruits mature for a long time on the flower spike. It's a very healthy, cold and rot resistant plant to grow outdoors fixed in trees, walls, or, in pots in an orchid mix.

Adult plants need a sunny position to become red in the blooming period. In a luminous shade it flowers, but the leaves remain green. The rose bracts persist a long time, and if flowers are pollinated black pointed fruits will appear as shown in the picture. It's curious because, when the plant grows in very shaded locations the leaves become very long, to the point to seem a completely different plant and very elegant indeed, with no weak aspects. However, if it is gradually moved to full sun it blooms and the leaves become red.
