Botanical name: Allagoptera caudescens

Family: Arecaceae / Palmae

Origin: Brazil

Allagoptera caudescens is a large, upright, palm growing up to 5-10 feet tall in its native habitat. It prefers full sun and regular watering, although it can tolerate some drought. It is an excellent choice for seaside gardens as it is extremely salt tolerant, making it perfect for areas with wind and salty air. This slow-growing species can be grown in USDA Zones 9-11 and requires moderate water for best results.

In colder regions, outdoors, the Buri Palm does best with winter protection or in a container, as temperatures below 20°F can damage the plant. When growing this species in a container, it is recommended to use a high quality potting mix, making sure it stays well drained, as soggy soils can lead to root rot. During the growing season, water your Allagoptera caudescens regularly, allowing the top few inches of the soil to dry out in between waterings. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks during the active growing season for optimal growth.

Botanical names: Allamanda blanchetii, Allamanda violacea

Common names: Cherry Allamanda, Purple Allamanda

Family: Apocynaceae

Origin: Brazil

USDA Plant Hardiness MapVine or creeper plantSemi-shadeFull sunWatering: Regular. Let topsoil dry slightlyPink flowersPlant attracts butterflies, hummingbirdsIrritating plantSubtropical plant. Mature plant cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

This evergreen tropical vine blooms during summer and fall: glossy point burgundy-brown buds open into flowers with 5 partially overlapped petals of an unusual tint of pink - cherry ice cream. Their narrow, funnel-shaped basements are a bit darker. In cool weather the petals change it's color for more saturate. The flowers are followed by thorny ovoid seed-capsules. Long, bright green, fuzzy leaves with slightly wavy edges are gathered in whisks on weak creeping stalks. During a season allamanda grows up for 2" to 9", highest possible height is 9-18ft. Using regular prune you can have a shrub or a twister. The plant has neither thorns nor tendrils it demands support to keep it's shape. It twists around in a certain specific direction. Do not try to change the direction - it may cause damage to the vine! As flowers are usually generated on young sprouts, late or too short prune may result in poor blossoming. The best time for pruning is November. Allamanda grows well in full sun or in light shade and prefers soil with good drainage. It does not tolerate either drought or flooding. From November till February the plant should have a time for repose - the optimal temperature is about 65F and watering must be less then usual (but the soil still should be always gently moist). In case of temperature drop below 59f for a long time the vine weakens and may die. Allamanda suffers from droughts to a more or lesser extent. Allamanda can be propagated by cuttings, air-layers, and seeds. Seeds come up in 3 - 6 weeks. They should be kept in a light, warm place, in moist but not wet soil. It grows well when was grafted on yellow allamanda. If grown indoors should be watered regularly with warm water. All the parts of the plant are toxic if it is swallowed. Latex can be irritating for skin. Can be cultivated as annual.

Very attractive ever-blooming shrub with bright yellow trumpet-like flowers. Night-scented flowers year-round. Prickly seed pods follow the flowers with winged seeds that fly about when the pod dries and breaks open. Allamanda is perennial in tropical climates and may be treated as an annual or brought inside during cold weather and replanted after danger of frost. The plant has milky sap and is considered poisonous; all parts are highly cathartic (hence the botanical name). Grows well in most soils, but becomes chlorotic in very alkaline conditions. In areas where there is seasonal change, keep fairly dry during winter and prune in spring before growth begins. It may be desirable to prune annually in any case to control for size.

Mature plant cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

The plant is quite versatile and makes for an excellent garden plant in USDA growing zones 7-9. It can either be grown as a large shrub of 5-10 feet in height or as a small shrub of 2-5 feet. Alpinia nutans requires full sun or partial shade, but prefers humid conditions and regular watering. Its stunning hot pink flowers, borne atop long flowering stems, bloom beginning in June and continue until the Fall.

It is a fairly salt tolerant plant, making it suitable for seaside areas. In cold climates, the mature plant is hardy at least to the low 30s Fahrenheit for a short time, although for best results it should be grown in a pot and stored in an area that does not freeze in the winter, such as a greenhouse or garage. Watering should be reduced in cold conditions and kept to a minimum until warm weather resumes. During the spring, the rhizome should be restrained or it will overthrow its container. Plants should be repotted in the spring if they outgrow their original container. Fertilize annually with compost or an appropriate plant food to encourage growth, and do regular pest and disease checks.

Alpinia nutans is similar to Alpinia malaccensis and Alpinia zerumbet. Alpinia nutans var. longiramosa is a synonym of Alpinia zerumbet.

Zones 10-11 USDA are ideal for growing Alternanthera dentata, but those living in cooler climates can still enjoy this plant with a few extra steps. Pot your Alternanthera dentata in a pot that can be moved indoors during a frost. Mature cold-hardy at least to 30s F for a short time, this beautiful tropical plant is also salt tolerant and makes for a great choice for seaside gardens.

While some of the better-known species are aquatic plants, most are terrestrial. They take many forms, from prostrate to erect to floating.

The flowers of this plant are very insignificant, bearing small bracts on a single stalk. These are best cut off, to allow the plant to concentrate on it's foliage. An attractive border plant or groundcover. About 10cm high, 1m spread.

Although Alternanthera can usually only be found during the warmer months in nurseries, it can be grown all year round. Grows best in full sun and in good soil this plant will respond handsomely. Fertilizing should be done with a water soluble variety so as not to burn the foliage. Can be clipped occasionally to form a neat low edging.

Propagation can be done by dividing larger plants during the cooler months of the year.
