One of the few ground covers that grow equally well in sun or semi-shade. Plants make a compact, upright bush of eight to twelve inches in height. The pale violet flowers have deep purple blotches on the lower petals with yellow inside. The cool colors are a welcome relief during the heat of summer. This everblooming ground cover looks like a bright blanket. Attracts bufferflies and makes a blooming atmosphere. Easy to grow, drought tolerant.

Family: Boraginaceae
Octopus Bush, Tree Heliotrope, Velvetleaf Soldierbush
Origin: East Tropical Africa, South Tropical Africa, Madagascar, China, Japan, India, Malesia, Australia
Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Use salt water for their water requirements, deposits the excess salt onto one leaf on each bunch, turning it yellow.

To minimise water loss it has developed hair covered leaves, these hairs also give the plant a silver hue, reflecting large amounts of the sun's heat rather than absorbing it.

Trachelospermum asiaticum, Asian Jasmine, Yellow star jasmine

Click to see full-size image Trachelospermum asiaticum
Family: Apocynaceae
Asian Jasmine, Yellow star jasmine
Origin: Southeast Asia
Vine or creeperFull sunShadeSemi-shadeModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersYellow/orange flowersFragrantAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Moderately frost hardy vine that grows in full sun to full shade, asian jasmine has oval leaves 1-2 inches long that are glossy and dark green. It has a compact habit and will grow prostrate on the ground or cling to a wall. It is the answer for anyone wanting that elusive combination: an evergreen climber with heavily scented flowers. The foliage is neat and unobtrusive, and makes a good background for the clusters of creamy white flowers that appear in mid-summer. It is particularly good for growing over an arch or arbour where the delicious perfume can be best appreciated.
