It is a drought resistant tree grown for its abundant late summer flowers and papery, lantern-like fruit. The tree is small, open-branching, deciduous, with a rounded crown. Leaves emerge pinkish bronze to purplish in spring, mature to a bright green in summer and turn yellow (quality variable) in fall. Bright yellow flowers appear in summer through fall in long terminal panicles. Sometimes flowering period extends to early winter. Falling blossoms may or may not resemble "golden rain", but the fallen blossoms often form an attractive golden carpet under the tree. Flowers give way to interesting, brown, papery seed capsules which somewhat resemble Chinese lanterns. Known as Luan in China, its flowers are used both as a yellow dye and in traditional medicine, and the tree is planted over the graves of scholars. The inflated capsular fruit are wind blown, ultimately shattering to disseminate the seeds. Naturalized in many places because of its capacity for long-distance dispersal. Fruits are edible. The Koelreuteria paniculata can tolerate semi-shade or full sun conditions. Easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils. Tolerates moderate wind, drought and many city air pollutants. Dry to medium moisture. Growth rate is low. During the early years, it is best to stake the tree to ensure a straight trunk. It also tolerates some salt spray but requires well-drained soil. It would be hard to find a more adaptive yellow flowering tree for urban planting. It makes a nice patio tree, creating light shade but its brittle wood can break easily in windy weather. Koelreuteria paniculata has no serious insect or disease problems.

Litchi chinensis, Nephelium litchi, Lychee, Lichee

Click to see full-size image Litchi chinensis, Nephelium litchi
Family: Sapindaceae
Lychee, Lichee
Origin: China
Big tree > 20 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterEdibleSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Slow growing, but reaching heights of 35'. It has attractive pinnate leaves of a shining leather texture. The fruit, when ripe, has dark red-brown and rough skin, is 1 to 2 inch long and grows in bunches. Under the brittle skin, the flesh is pearly white, sweet and jelly-like, though firm. It is eaten fresh or sun-dried (Litchi Nuts) or canned in syrup. It is a good source of vitamin C and phosphorous. Often called the best fruit in the world. You can't argue with three billion Asians. You've eaten these no doubt in Chinese restaurants, where they're served either within a dish (succulent and sweet) or dried (sweet and dry). Litchi has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years.

Lychee trees like regular watering; microelements applications are necessary to avoid chlorosis. For bearing-age trees, cut off all water and fertilizer by October. Stress caused by winter's drought and cold is believed to induce heavier bloom.

Propagated by airlayering. Growing from seed is not successful method as seedlings usually do not survive long, requiring special mico-components in soil. This is why grafting is not very popular method either as getting a vigorous healthy rootstock seedling is problematic.

More info...

Litchi No Mai Chee (No Mi Ci, No Mai Tsz, No Mai Tsze). The best variety, smaller seed than Sweetheart, seed freestone.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

What is air-layered plant

Q: What is an air-layered plant?

Air-layering is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation woody ornamentals and fruit trees, when branches, while still attached to the parent plant, start producing roots where they come in contact with a rooting medium. Minimized water stress and stable nutrient levels make this method successful. Air-layering is used when grafting is not possible for a number of reasons.

Benefits of the air-layering:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a branch from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for the air-layered plant)
  • creates larger plant much faster unlike when growing from cuttings

Nephelium lappaceum, Euphoria nephelium, Dimocarpus crinita, Rambutan

Click to see full-size image Nephelium lappaceum, Euphoria nephelium, Dimocarpus crinita
Family: Sapindaceae
Rambutan
Origin: Malaysia
Big tree > 20 ftFull sunModerate waterEdibleUltra tropical, min. temperature 55F

Ruby red and covered with fine green-tipped hairs, the rambutan is one of the most attractive fruits and also one of the most delicious when eaten at the peak of ripeness between May and September when it is most plentiful. A knife is used to slit the skin around the middle, after which it opens easily and the flesh can be eaten with a fork as a memorable after-meal treat. It is beginning to appear in specialty markets. It is grown in the same way as Litchi. The fruit is the white fleshy aril surrounding the single seed. It is sweet and acid and can be eaten raw or stewed. The seed has to be started in high humidity and good warmth in a sandy soil mix kept evenly moist. When germination occurs (and this may take many weeks) and green growth shows, transplant the plant to a pot of rich soil. Keep the seedling evenly moist and warm. The rambutan is a leafy branching plant that makes a distinctive accent. Although you might have to search for the fruit, it is worth the time.

Nephelium lappaceum - Rambutan (w/express shipping)

Rambutan - ruby red and covered with fine green-tipped hairs, the Rambutan is one of the most attractive fruits and also one of the most delicious when eaten at the peak. It is one of the rarest plants in tropical fruit tree collections.
Rambutan is a type of fruit which looks much akin to the lychee with a sweet/sour flavor. It is high in iron, vitamin C, copper and antioxidants and while it may be rarely found in your neck of the woods, it is highly prized in Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, and Sri Lanka and into India as well as eastward through Vietnam, the Phillippines and Indonesia. The name rambutan is derived from the Malay word rambut, which means hairy. Rambutan fruit is indeed hairy in appearance.
The outer peel is red and covered with malleable, fleshy spines. The interior flesh is white to pale pink with a flavor similar to grapes.
Rambutan trees like to stay moist. They thrive in temps from 71-86 degrees F. In fact, temperature and the proper humidity are the keys to growing a thriving rambutan.
