This is one of the hardiest tropical magnolias. It is very similar to the popular Magnolia x Alba, although it is much more cold tolerant. If you have cool winters, this species is a better choice than magnolia x Alba which is somewhat cold sensitive. Flower has 3" long and narrow petals, off-white to light cream/ivory in color. Fragrance is very strong. The plant growth habit is somewhat similar to Magnolia champaca, but it is much faster growing and more vigorous plant. Similar-looking flowers: Magnolia baillonii (Michelia baillonii). Leaves of this species have rounded tips, unlike some other related magnolias (M. Alba, M. champaca) which are normally pointed.

Very slow growing, star magnolia is usually seen in home landscapes as a medium sized shrub. In autumn the leaves turn yellow to bronze before falling. It is striking in late winter or early spring when it appears smothered in brilliant white flowers as it blooms before the leaves appear. Star magnolia likes deep, organic, acid soil. Propagation: It is fairly easy to root cuttings taken after the flower buds have formed in early to mid summer. Treat with rooting hormone to insure success. Seeds may be used, but they need special handling and are slow to germinate.

The Umbrella magnolia (Magnolia tripetala) is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach a height of 45-50 ft in a natural setting. Its leaves are large, shiny, and spread out from stout stems. The leaves look like the spokes of an umbrella, which gives the tree its common name.
The Umbrella magnolia produces large, intensely fragrant flowers that are 3 to 5 inches in diameter, with six to nine creamy-white petals. Fruit is cone-like, 4 to 6 inches. The fruit turns pink when mature, later turning brown, and contains several pink to red seeds that mature in late summer to early fall. The tree blooms in late spring/early summer.
The Umbrella magnolia is easy to grow and attractive. It's cold hardy in USDA zones 5-9. It can be grown in containers, reaching a height of 8-10. To grow it in a container, use a well-drained potting mix with a layer of gravel at its base. Place the pot in shade and check the soil frequently to ensure it is moist but not soggy. In cold regions, plant the Magnolia in a container and move it indoors before temperatures fall below freezing. Water the tree only when the soil is dry in winter, and fertilize it regularly during the growing season.
Sweet Bay can be found in the wild in Florida bay heads, swamps and stream banks. Leaves are very fine for flavoring broths and sauces. Fresh off the tree, the flavor is unique and fun to use. If you have a Florida Sweet Bay, your cooking will have flavors folks outside Florida can never hope to duplicate. Florida Bay Laurel likes moist, acid soils. If you use Bay Laurel in your landscape, be sure plenty of water is available. If you have a moist spot on your land, plant this tree. You will also be rewarded by the attractive white delicately fragrant flowers. No bugs or other pests. Fertilize once or twice a year with an acid fertilizer.

This is hybrid between Michelia Champaca and Magnolia Montana with sweet strong fragrance of flowers resembles juicyfruit gum. The fragrance is released in the early morning hours and lasts all day long, especially strong at night. Its name honors Florentine botanist Pietro Antonio Micheli. Michelia alba is now cultivated for ornamental purposes in most tropical and lower subtropical countries. This tallish, evergreen tree has creamy white blooms with 15-20 sepals, and petals which are deliciously fragrant. The flowers are highly prized by people and are often made into necklaces. Both the flowers and leaves are highly aromatic and can be used in fragrance production. The flowers from Michelia champaca are used to make the world's most expensive perfume'Joy'. People did not invent JOY perfume, Nature made this creation leading to the development of JOY, the most expensive perfume fragrance in the world. Michelia flowers produce in great quantities. On a warm humid night, the scents can easily be enjoyed several hundred feet away. If you drive near by, you will notice the scent immediately. People and every insect you can imagine are attracted to the blooms. These are flowers you don't have to "stick your nose in" as the scent exudes from the tree. However, you really can't STOP sticking your nose into a flower over and over again. Nectar insects appear frantic, driven like drug addicts, bashing into each other to get to the heart of every flower on the tree. The white Michelia flower is also the city flower of Shanghai, China. Planting a Michelia tree either indoors as bonsai or in your backyard really makes your home a sweet home. Also you could take the flower, home made natural perfume, into car, office, rest room, and anywhere you want fragrant atmosphere. One oriental custom is to use the white flowers as sweet scented decoration, such as hair-pin-flower for girls, and chest-pin-flower for ladies. The tree has flowers and green leaves all year round, beautifying its surroundings. Besides, the clearly veined leaf can be made into a special bookmark.
Michelia alba has good antimicrobial properties, especially the leaves. It also has an antioxidant character with moderate effect.
