Family: Lamiaceae   (Formerly:Verbenaceae)
Flaming Glorybower, Clerodendron
Origin: Western Africa
Vine or creeperFull sunModerate waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

It is a woody or semi-woody evergreen vine or running shrub to 12 ft (3.7 m) long, that climbs by twining. The leaves are oval, to 7 in (18 cm) long, and arranged in opposite pairs. Flowers are salverform (which means tuba shaped) having a slender tube with an abruptly expanded corolla. They are scarlet (sometimes white), about 1 in (2.5 cm) across and borne in dense terminal clusters to 5 in (12.7 cm) inches long. The fruit is unknown. Prefers full sun, but does best with some shade during the hottest part of the day in summer. Water frequently in summer, sparingly in winter. Hardiness: USDA Zones 10 - 11, does not tolerate frost. Requires a sturdy support like pergola. This evergreen climber is popular in warm, humid climates and can be used as an evergreen screen on a trellis or wall. The flowers are extremely showy and attractive to butterflies as well as people. Encourage branching and more flowers by cutting back previous season's growth to a suitable pair of buds.

Clerodendrum thomsoniae, Bleeding heart, Glory bower, Clerodendron

Family: Lamiaceae   (Formerly:Verbenaceae)
Bleeding heart, Glory bower, Clerodendron
Origin: Tropical and Central Africa
Vine or creeperFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersDeciduousAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Attractive bushy, tropical looking twining vine. Glossy dark green leaves are from 5 to 7 inches long (18 cm). Spectacular, dramatic flowers are slightly flat, they have white sepals on either side of bright crimson petals. The appearance may be liken to a line of dangling hearts, each emerging from the other. This plant is often seen in pots where it will abide in a continual state of flowering. Often, fruits develop. Green at first, they blacken as they ripen. Then, they split open from the top to the bottom to present a bright orange fleshy lining that contains four black seeds. Blooms mostly from April to October-November in natural conditions of tropical climate. The plant drops some leaves (not all of them) in winter, and has some flowers (not much) even during the winter time. As long as you provide lots of light to it, it'll bloom most of the time.

Harlequin Glory, Clerodendron
Origin: eastern China and Japan
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersFragrantDeciduousAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Bushy shrub or small tree with large dark green leaves (bronze when young) to 8" and white fragrant flowers. Leaves, when crushed emit a "peanut butter" fragrance. Blooms in late summer and early fall, showy red calyxes cover small, and ultimately, bright blue fruit. Word Clerodendrum: from the Greek, klero, chance, and dendron, tree (some are tree-like), alluding to the unpredictable medicinal properties of plants in this genus. Trichotomum: branching into three. The real beauty is in the seeds which are blue and coated in a red tissue. Hardy to USDA Zone (7)8, this bush can tolerate some frost. The fruits are turning blue when mature.

Clerodendrum ugandense, Rotheca myricoides, Butterfly Clerodendrum, Blue Butterfly Bush, Blue Glory Bower, Blue Wings

Click to see full-size image Clerodendrum ugandense, Rotheca myricoides
Family: Lamiaceae   (Formerly:Verbenaceae)
Butterfly Clerodendrum, Blue Butterfly Bush, Blue Glory Bower, Blue Wings
Origin: Tropical Africa, Kenya and Uganda
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunDry conditionsBlue/lavender/purple flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Specimen plant. Sky blue flowers looking like butterflies - unusual color for tropics. Clerodendrum ugandense has been cultivated in botanical gardens for almost 100 years, but has only recently been considered as flowering potplant. It is a fast growing plant which in nature grows to 6-9 ft, but is easily kept much smaller. The irregular flowers are bright blue, in two different shades of blue and are produced more or less continuously throughout the summer and fall. Flowers have long purple anthers which bend elegantly upwards.

Grow this clerodendrum in partial shade. Water freely in growth but reduce watering in winter. Hardiness: USDA Zones 10 - 11. Performs best in a frostfree climate, but it is root hardy in zones 8 and 9, freezing to the ground in winter, but returning from its roots in spring.

Prune back as needed to keep it in bushy shape. Cut back the old wood to a pair of buds to improve flowering. In areas that get frost, you can get the most consistent flowering by growing it in a large pot that can be brought indoors when temperatures approach freezing.

It has an odd scent when the leaves are brushed which may serve to repel chewing insects because it is pest free.

Origin: Australia

A vigorous twining climber with large, shiny, bright green leaves. In spring it produces beautiful fragrant white flowers in large terminal clusters with fragrance of carnations. The flowers are usually short lived but very abundant. Leaves are smooth, 6 to 12 inches long. The plant can spread over large areas. The fleshy fruit is whitish, egg-shaped and surprisingly large - about 2-3 inches long, resembling Noni fruit in shape. Each fruit bears a single seed. It is a hardy plant for tropical and sub-tropical areas but, due to its vigor, it is unsuited to small gardens. The plants will tolerate shade but flower better where sunlight is available for a large part of the day. The species is adaptable to a range of soils but requires plenty of water.
