Bauhinia hookerii, Lysiphyllum hookerii, Mountain Ebony, Pegunny, White bauhinia

Click to see full-size image Bauhinia hookerii, Lysiphyllum hookerii
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae
Mountain Ebony, Pegunny, White bauhinia
Origin: Northeastern Australia
Can be used for bonsaiSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterWhite/off-white flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Medium tree with large spreading crown and white flowers, edged in pink and deep pink or red stamens. Bifid leaves are small. Prefers full sun places. Drought tolerant once established. Slow growing when small. Seeds need to soak in several changes of very warm water before planting. Germination takes 14 to 45 days at 85oF (30oC). Makes a good container specimen or bonsai. Due to its small leaves, multi-branching habit and a slow growth rate even a young seedling looks like a miniature tree. Bonsai plants do not require much shaping since this bauhinia naturally shaped as bonsai.

See picture of flower.

Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae

Origin: Cuba, Mexico (Yucatan)
Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterPink flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This unusual Bauhinia has a single "fused" leaf structure, unlike most bauhinias with a split "camel-foot" shaped leaves.

It has pendant flowers coming in groups, of very pretty pink and yellow combination color, resembling Fuchsia or Lonicera flowers. Buds are pink, thick, cylindrical, shaped like a cow tong, hence the common name.

Grows into a small tree or a large bush. Great for small yards that welcome butterflies and humming birds.
