Calliandra eriophylla - seeds

Fairyduster, Mesquitilla, Mock mesquite. Native to deserts and arid grasslands in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and Mexico. A hardy calliandra with flowers and leaves looking very similar to tropical Calliandra selloi. Densely branched, deciduous shrub to 3 ft., though usually much shorter, with grayish-pubescent leaflets, flowers and pods. The petals of fairy duster are inconspicuous; it is the long, pink filaments of the stamens that make the showy display. This little shrub blooms in spring. The exquisite clusters of flowers with their many long stamens form delicate, pink balls, giving the plant a fluffy pink appearance in full bloom. It belongs to a group of mostly tropical woody plants that includes acacias and mimosas.
Soak overnight, cover seeds with 1/2" well-drained soil mix, keep warm, damp and in bright light.

Calliandra surinamensis, Surinam Powder Puff, Pink Powder Puff, Surinamese Stickpea, Officiers-kwast

Click to see full-size image Calliandra surinamensis
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Mimosoideae
Surinam Powder Puff, Pink Powder Puff, Surinamese Stickpea, Officiers-kwast
Origin: Surinam
Can be used for bonsaiLarge shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

A low branching shrub or small tree with multiple trunks, growing up to a height of 15 feet in tropics, but usually stays below 6-7 ft. Showy pink flowers, like a powderpuff, are bright pink on the surface and pale pink to white inside the "powderpuff" ball. The plant has evergreen bipinnate, oblong leaves that are pointed (unlike C. haematocephala which leaves are more oval). Surinam powder puff has a dense foliage and is a fast grower. A flat pod, first green later brown, contains 5 - 6 seeds; it curls open to release the brown seeds. This plant is cultivated for its ornamental purposes; it can also be used for bonsai. Hardiness: USDA zone 9 - 11. Propagation: seeds and cuttings. Culture: full sun / light shade, rich well drained soil; acidic to slightly alkaline. After establisment with the aid of water, only regular pruning is needed to keep the plant within bounds. This is a excellent container plant for the cooler climates and for the warmer regions a beautiful outdoors plant.
