Tree Wisteria, Vanwykshout, Mogaba
Origin: South Africa

Ethnomedical statements / products have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. The Tree Wisteria is certainly one of the most spectacular of our indigenous trees when in flower, it has the splendour of the jacaranda, which unfortunately is proving to be an invader species in parts of South Africa. Given time and effort this tree could replace the jacaranda trees from Argentina and carpet Pretoria streets with indigenous purple blooms instead. This decorative, small to medium-sized tree is deciduous, dropping its leaves only for a short period in early spring. The tree is normally multi-stemmed, but it can be pruned to form a single stem. The bark of the stem is brownish grey, rough and deeply fissured. Leaves, which are spirally arranged, are suspended from drooping branches. The drooping, blue-mauve, fragrant, pea-like flowers hang from the branches in bunches, often covering the whole tree. Flowering time is from August to January (spring and early summer). Flowers are followed by papery, brown fruit pods, that hang from the branches in clusters, and never split to release their seeds. Bolusanthus honours Harry Bolus (1834-1911), who was a South African botanist and founder of the Cape Town Bolus Herbarium, speciosus means beautiful or showy in Latin. The wood, which is highly sought after by carpenters, makes excellent furniture. It works well on a lathe, turning out beautiful lampshades and other articles. The straight growing stems are very hard, termite resistant and used for fencing posts. The roots are used medicinally to alleviate stomach problems and the inner bark used to treat abdominal cramps. It also has excellent potential as a tree for landscaping and growing in the home garden. It is an ideal tree to grace a medium to small garden, as it never grows too big. It can be grown in a container and looks spectacular on any sunny patio. As mentioned earlier, the tree wisteria makes a beautiful street tree with its non-invasive root system. To propagate place the seeds in hot water and soak overnight. Sow the seeds in containers filled with river sand, covering lightly with finer sand. Remember that the sowing depth should not be deeper than the diameter of the seed. The seeds germinate quickly and can be transplanted after the second leaf has emerged. A good soil mixture would be equal parts of river sand, loam and compost. With good care this tree can grow up to 800 mm per year. Bolusanthus speciosus can withstand moderate frost, but will need protection for the first few years. It can also survive periods of drought.

Young leaves a pale green to pinkish, almost white, sometimes with light variegation, and hangs down like a large handkerchief (like in all related species (browneas, amherstia, maniltoa, etc.).

Flowering occurs on 3-4th year from seed, at the base of the branches. The flower lasts a few days, however the view is unforgettable.

Brownea coccinea subsp. capitella, Brownea capitella, Rose of Venezuela, Scarlet Flame Bean

Click to see full-size image Brownea coccinea subsp. capitella, Brownea capitella
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae
Rose of Venezuela, Scarlet Flame Bean
Origin: South America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsUltra tropical, min. temperature 55F

A slow-growing, small tree with very large heads of red flowers which hang beneath the foliage. The leaflets are aristate, having an elongated apex. This species is less spreading than other brownia species, with some branches ascending. The leaves have 5-7 leaflets and are uniformly pinky brown when young. The inflorescences, which occur on the old twigs as well as the ends of the branches, are less densely packed than other species, but the flowers are somewhat larger giving a more lax look to the lanterns. The petals have a more magenta hue. The dark brown pods are not hairy. Brownea capitella is sometimes considered a subspecies of Brownea coccinea, which has small, bright red inflorescences and hairless green twigs. Close related species - Brownea grandiceps, Brownea ariza.

Rose of Venezuela, Scarlet Flame Bean

A slow-growing, small tree with very large heads of red flowers which hang beneath the foliage. The leaflets are aristate, having an elongated apex. Young leaves are mottled pale pink and greenish white, turning pinkish brown and finally uniformly green as they mature. The pods are velvety, and propagation is from seeds. Brownea grandiceps is recognisable from its long pinnate leaves with 12-18 pairs of leaflets and the pendulous bunches of young leaves are pale green, splashed and mottled in a reddish brown. The spotted handkerchieves are impressive enough, but the inflorescences are even more of a sight - dense, salmon-pink balls of 20 cm or more across.

Origin: West Indies
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterYellow/orange flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This is a tough, spiny tree with an erupting growth habit. New branches burst straight up as if ejected by a volcano, cascading onto the countryside below as they become longer and heavier. Mature height is 30 feet, but it's easy to keep under 15' with annual pruning. Yellow-orange flowers along the branches on and off all year - especially after a rain. Flowers in times of high humidity. No environmental or pest problems. A very decorative accent tree with many blossoms and unusual form and foliage. Leaves are tiny and evergreen. Requires a lot of sun for at least part of the day. Highly drought-tolerant.
