 Caesalpinia lutea
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae
Yellow Peacock flower, Barbados pride, dwarf poinciana, Barbados flower-fence
Origin: West Indies and tropical America
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterYellow/orange flowersDeciduousAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsThorny or spinySubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Evergreen shrub or small tree in frost free climates, a deciduous shrub in zone 9, and a returning perennial in zone 8. In the tropics it gets 15-20' tall and its ungainly, wide spreading branches can cover about the same width. In cultivation the peacock flower is usually 8-12' tall, growing that large even after freezing to the ground the previous winter. The stem, branches and petioles are armed with sharp spines and the leaves are fernlike and twice compound, with many small, oval leaflets. The flowers are borne in terminal clusters 8-10" tall throughout most of the year in tropical climates and in late summer and fall where frosts occur. The fruits, typical legumes, are flat, 3-4" long, and when ripe they split open noisily to expose the little brown beans. Very easy to grow in alkaline to acidic, well-drained soils. This is a fast growing, but short lived plant. It is moderately tolerant of salty conditions. Peaccock flower benefits from pruning, and can be shaped to tree form or shrubby bush form. The striking orange red flowers are an attention grabber! Use peacock flower as a specimen or in a mixed shrub border. It has an open, spreading habit and the branches sometimes get too long for their own good and break off. Still, a line of peacock flowers makes a showy fine-textured screen or informal hedge. You can cut peacock flower to the ground in late winter or early spring to get a bushier, more compact shrub.

Peacock flower lives up to its name with incredibly showy blossoms of orange and red. The striking flowers are an attention grabber! Evergreen shrub or small tree in frost free climates, a deciduous shrub in zone 9, and a returning perennial in zone 8. In the tropics it gets 15-20' tall and its ungainly, wide spreading branches can cover about the same width. The stem, branches and petioles are armed with sharp spines and the leaves are fernlike and twice compound, with many small, oval leaflets. The flowers are bowl shaped, 2-3" across, with five crinkled, unequal red and orange petals, and ten prominent bright red stamens that extend way beyond the corolla. The flowers are borne in terminal clusters 8-10" tall throughout most of the year in tropical climates and in late summer and fall where frosts occur. There also are forms with yellow and forms with dark red flowers. The fruits, typical legumes, are flat, 3-4" long, and when ripe they split open noisily to expose the little brown beans. Very easy to grow in alkaline to acidic, well-drained soils. This is a fast growin plant. It is moderately tolerant of salty conditions. Subfamily: Faboideae
Kaka Beak, Parrot Beak, Lobster Claw
Origin: New Zealand
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunRegular waterWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This exotic shrub from New Zealand puts on a magnificent show. Now extinct in the wild, it produces dense masses of bright pink and red showy flowers-up to 15 in a bunch, suspended from arching branches.

It puts on a spectacular show of exotic blooms that look like tropical bird bills! Parrot's Beak is an easy-to-grow bush that grows 4 to 8 feet tall and wide. Throughout Spring, it becomes loaded with big, 3-inch, bright-pink blooms that dangle like earrings from pretty, fern-like foliage. The plant attracts butterflies and hummingbirds - as well as children, who like to feel the thick, waxy blooms resembling pink flamingos! This is an endangered species that is close to extinction in its homeland of New Zealand.

It is a spreading, fast-growing shrub 3'-12' tall with fern like foliage, it tolerates a wide range of soils and withstands some minor frost. Needs protection from heavy frost. The flowers are bird pollinated. It can be cultivated from seeds or cuttings.

Clianthus - from Greek kleios, glory and anthos, flower, meaning glory flower; puniceus - meaning blood red.

Coriandrum sativum is an annual herb.

The lower leaves of coriander are lobed and look a little like parsley. The upper leaves are finely dissected into linear segments and almost fernlike. The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical.

Fresh leaves (Cilantro) provide an exotic tang in Asian dishes. The dried seeds (Ketumbar) are used in curry powders, chutneys, confectionery, cakes and sauces.

Delonix regia, Poinciana regia, Flame tree, Flamboyant, Royal poinciana, Gul Mohr, Peacock Flower

Click to see full-size image Delonix regia, Poinciana regia
Family: Fabaceae
Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae
Flame tree, Flamboyant, Royal poinciana, Gul Mohr, Peacock Flower
Origin: Madagascar
Big tree > 20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersDeciduousAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

One of the most conspicuous flowering trees seen in the tropics. Bright fiery red/orange blossoms cover its mimosa type leaves which close up and go to sleep for the night. Can be grown as a potted tree. Very tropical! This large tree, which naturally assumes a spreading umbrella shape, is now found in gardens, parks, and planted along streets throughout the tropics. It can grow as tall as 59ft and has smooth greyish-colored bark and attractive feathery, fern-like leaves, which drop annually during the dry season. At the same time as the new leaves appear, the tree is covered with masses offive-petalled flowers that are usually bright red-orange but may also appear in pale apricot. Blooming is followed by long, flattened, leathery dark brown or black seed pods. Delonix requires full sun and adequate space to take its characteristic form. It flowers best in areas that have two distinct seasons but can be impressive even in moister places.

"The Royal Poinciana is one of the most spectacular flowering trees in the USA, and probably among the top 10 on this planet. In full bloom, it is like a regal elephant caparisoned in red and yellow brilliance." (Larry M. Schokman, The Kampong, National Tropical Botanic Garden)

Delonix regia - Royal poinciana, Flamboyant

Royal poinciana - one of the most popular tropical trees covered with bright red orchid-like flowers from late winter through early summer. A must for any tropical garden, this tree however requires space since it spreads its branches 30-40 ft wide or more.
