Dendrobium lindleyi, Dendrobium aggregatum, Dendrobium

Click to see full-size image Dendrobium lindleyi, Dendrobium aggregatum
Family: Orchidaceae
Dendrobium
Origin: Southeast Asia
Small shrub 2-5 ftSemi-shadeEpiphyteModerate waterYellow/orange flowers

These are classified as dwarf dendrobiums. They do not grow into tall canes but have short spindle-shaped pseudobulbs bearing thick, leathery leaves.

Dendrobium lindleyi definitely require a change in the cultural requirements at various times of the year and become dormant in the fall through winter months. Spring to Fall give adequate amounts of water, fertilizer and light. Fall to winter give cooler temperatures (especially at night), water sparingly to prevent them from drying out, keep on dry side.

Phalaenopsis-type dendrobium hybrids are derived from Vappodes phalaenopsis (syn. Dendrobium bigibbum). These evergreen orchids reward the beginner with sprays of vividly colored long-lasting flowers in exchange for minimal care.

Dendrobium pierardii, Dendrobium aphyllum, Dendrobium Orchid

Click to see full-size image Dendrobium pierardii, Dendrobium aphyllum
Family: Orchidaceae
Dendrobium Orchid
Origin: SE Asia
Full sunSemi-shadeEpiphyteModerate waterBlue/lavender/purple flowersFragrantDeciduous

A very widespread Dendrobium species found through India, China and the Himalayas to Burma, Thailand, and the Malaysian peninsula. More often found in cultivation under the botanical synonym of Dendrobium pierardii. These plants, which have pendant canes (pseudobulbs), are easily grown in baskets or mounted. In the fall the leaves fall and the plant enjoys a rest, where in water is withheld. In the spring, the fragrant flowers appear from the fallen leaf points. As the flowers fade, new growth begins at the base of the previous years growth. The leafless canes often rebloom for several years. Well grown plants can reach 3 to 4ft in cane lengths.

Origin: South East Asia
Groundcover and low-growing 2ftVine or creeperShadeSemi-shadeEpiphyteModerate waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersBlue/lavender/purple flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Dendrobiums, with around 1000 species and inumerable hybrids, the hobbyist is faced with many various growing conditions, and it is cultivated everywhere in the world. There are still more hybrids being discovered in the highlands of New Guinea. This makes them the second largest orchid genus in the world after Bulbophyllum. The shape and form of their stems and leaves vary tremendously, but the pattern of flowers is fairly constant ranging in size from very small to huge. Dendrobiums come from South East Asia in an area that stretches from Northern India to the islands off the East coast of New Guinea and Australia to Polynesia.

See Orchid page for pictures of different orchids and care info.
