Lagunaria patersonia, Hibiscus patersonia, Laguna squamea, Primrose Tree, Cow Itch Tree

Click to see full-size image Lagunaria patersonia, Hibiscus patersonia, Laguna squamea
Family: Malvaceae
Primrose Tree, Cow Itch Tree
Origin: Australia
Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterPink flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Small evergreen tree, olive green, entire, oval leaves, 2 to 4 inches long, with grayish tomentose undersides. Profuse pale pink to almost purplish flowers that appear in the leaf axils during summer look like small hibiscuses about 2 in across, with 5 reflexed petals surrounding a central column of stamens. The seed pods contain bright orange seeds among irritant bristles. Little water once established, tolerates drought, tolerates salt spray, needs good drainage. The tree has a beautiful, rounded canopy. Due to its tolerance of salt spray, salty irrigation and wind, it is a perfect oceanside plant. Flowers in spring. Zones 10-11.

This shrub looks much like a hibiscus (to which it is closely related) which flowers are ready to open. In fact, the flowers never open much, hence the common name of 'Sleepy Hibiscus'. It blooms often, and the flowers attract humminbirds. The 2 inch long tubular flowers appear to be constructed of crimson crepe paper as they nod against the large oval leaves. This shrub can grow to 10 feet in height. The plant often becomes vinelike when grown in shady situations, sending out long stems that clamber over and up adjacent trees and bushes.

Thespesia populnea, Hibiscus populneus, Seaside Mahoe, Portia Tree, Milo

Click to see full-size image Thespesia populnea, Hibiscus populneus
Family: Malvaceae
Seaside Mahoe, Portia Tree, Milo
Origin: India
Big tree > 20 ftFull sunRegular waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Known as Milo in Hawaii, this tree is often planted in front of Buddhist Temples.

Originally from the Old World, the Portia Tree was brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers. The Tahitians considered it sacred and grew it near places of worship.

The fruits, flowers and young leaves are edible. The timber is hard, termite-resistant, has an attractive grain and dark-red color, and is naturally oily so it can be highly polished. As the timber does not impart a flavor, it is often used to carve wooden food bowls and food utensils in Hawaii.

Other products extracted from the plant includes tannin, oil and gums (a dark red resin exudes from the bark). A fast growing shrub that grows into a small tree with spreading branches, it casts welcome shade and in Hawaii were planted near homes for this purpose. In India, they were planted to provide shade in coffee and tea plantations.

Has many traditional medicinal uses.
