Paramaribo is a red-flowered hibiscus bush - the most rewarding for your landscape. This is a true species of H. rosa-sinensis, not a hybrid, it is very hardy, low maintenance and not susceptible to bugs as fancy cultivars, and doesn't become leggy as they do; it stays bushy with nice lush foliage. This hibiscus will bloom for you year round. Fast growing, free-branching, great accent plant or as a large specimen shrub for creating privacy. This item is certified for shipping to California.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis variegatus, Variegated Hibiscus, Hibiscus Cooperi

Hibiscus 'Hummels Fantasy'
 Hibiscus rosa-sinensis variegatus
Family: Malvaceae
Variegated Hibiscus, Hibiscus Cooperi
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunSemi-shadeKeep soil moistRegular waterOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

There are a number of cultivars often associated with 'Hibiscus Cooperi', like 'Snow Queen', 'Roseflake', 'Snowflake' and 'Hummels Fantasy'― an even more compact cultivar with lots of white variegation in the leaves.

Green foliage is dramatically splashed with bright white which provides striking contrast to the large red flowers. A festival of color as a patio container or landscape specimen. The Variegated Hibiscus is a large shrub with red flowers set against lovely variegated green, white and pink leaves. Large serrated edged flowers are red and are trumpeted shaped. The are often held in a semi-pendulous manner and when looked from the front, have a star shape. The floral tube is outrageously long and is covered in yellow stamens. This plant grows dense and large. The variegated leaves change color with age, and when planted in more sun, often hold on to the red and pink colors better. Variegated Hibiscus will be showiest around other plants that are dark green or dark red with larger, bolder and non-variegated leaves.

Tropical hibiscus is heat tolerant and prefers neutral to acidic, well-drained soil and full sun. These vibrantly blooming plants can be grown in mixed borders, or in large containers that can be moved indoors to overwinter if necessary.

Origin: Old World Tropics

Native to Old World Tropics, probably in the East Indies; now cultivated throughout the tropics. Erect, mostly branched; stem to 11ft tall, variously colored dark green to red. Plant exhibits marked photoperiodism, not flowering at shortening days of 13.5 hours, but flowering at 11 hours. In United States plants do not flower until short days of late fall or early winter. Since flowering is not necessary for fiber production, long light days for 34 months is the critical factor. It will adapt to a variety of soils. It will tolerate floods, and is very fast growing. For the calyces of fruits, about 3 weeks after tile onset of flowering, the first fruits are ready for picking. Reported to be antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, cholagogue, demulcent, digestive, diuretic, emollient, purgative, refrigerant, resolvent, sedative, stomachic, and tonic, roselle is a folk remedy for abscesses, bilious conditions, cancer, cough, debility, dyspepsia, dysuria, fever, hangover, heart ailments, hypertension, neurosis, scurvy, and strangury. The drink made by placing, the calyx in water, is said to be a folk remedy for cancer. Medicinally, leaves are emollient, and are much used in Guinea as a diuretic, refrigerant, and sedative; fruits are antiscorbutic; leaves, seeds, and ripe calyces are diuretic and antiscorbutic; and the succulent calyx, boiled in water, is used as a drink in bilious attacks; flowers contain gossypetin, anthocyanin, and glucoside hibiscin, which may have diuretic and choleretic effects, decreasing the viscosity of the blood, reducing blood pressure and stimulating intestinal peristalsis. In Burma, the seed are used for debility, the leaves as emollient. Taiwanese regard the seed as diuretic, laxative, and tonic. Philippines use the bitter root as an aperitive and tonic (Perry, 1980). Angolans use the mucilaginous leaves as an emollient and as a soothing cough remedy. Central Africans poultice the leaves on abscesses. The fruit consists of the large reddish calyces surrounding the small seed pods. Capsules are easily separated, but need not be removed before cooking.

Jamaica Tea flower (Karkade, Roselle) - "Agua de Flor de Jamaica", also called agua de Jamaica and rosa de Jamaica, is popular in Jamaica, Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America and the Caribbean. It is one of beverages made from fresh juices or extracts. It is served chilled, and in Jamaica this drink is a tradition on Christmas, served with fruit cake or potato pudding.

In Panama both the flowers and the drink are called saril (a derivative of the Jamaican word sorrel).

In the United States, hibiscus tea was popularized as "Red Zinger". Flowers are used to make a cold or hot tea sweetened with sugar. There has been some Medical studies which indicate that it lowers high blood pressure and also has diuretic effects. The flavor is on the tart side similar to a cranberry juice. In Mexico, it is also used for granites, ice pops and sangria.

Agua de Jamaica/Hibiscus Flowers Drink Recipe:

1 cup of Jamaica Flowers, 3 cups of water, 4 cups of water to make 2 quarts of the final drink, 1/2 cup of sugar, Ice cubes. Place the flowers in a small pot with the 3 cups of water. Bring them to a boil. Boil them for about 2-3 minutes over medium-high heat. Set aside for at least 4 hours, you can also make this step overnight. Strain the liquid into a pitcher and add the 4 cups of water and sugar. You can adjust the added water if you feel it is to tart to your palate. Stir, add ice cubes and let it chill. Enjoy!

A weeping tree hibiscus. Grows rapidly and blooms freely. Flowers look like parachutes and can be recognized by the fringed and lacy petals which are bent backward. It has slender and gracefully curved stems. It will reach about 6 to 8 feet with a spread of 5 to 6 feet. It is a very fast grower. It gets very large in pots, so one needs to prune it often to keep a desired form. Pruning also helps to keep a abundance of flowers, since flower are formed on new wood. Blooms sporadically all year long.

Hibiscus or Rosemallow is a large genus of about 200-220 species of flowering plants in the family Malvaceae, native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, and woody shrubs and small trees. The leaves are alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five petals, ranging from white to pink, red, purple or yellow, and from 4-15cm broad. The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule splits open at maturity.

Any ordinary garden soil will do as long as it isn't excessively dry. Tropical Hibiscus that are grown in greenhouses need a sunny location and a minimum winter temperature of 45-50F. In the spring they should be pruned by shortening the side shoots by two-thirds and when they have started into new growth, a 55-65F temperature should be maintained. Large plants may be grown in large pots or tubs, or they may be planted in a bed in the greenhouse and either grown as bushes or trained to wires or a trellis on a wall. Tropical Hibiscus: Cuttings, 3in long, can be inserted into sand and peat moss in March and April in a propagating case in the hothouse. They are kept there until they form roots, they are then potted in 3in pots and, later, in larger pots. When they are 6in long, the main shoots and side branches are pinched to encourage bushy growth. Hardy perennials: Seeds can be sown in drills 1in deep in light soil in May or June. The seedlings are transplanted, 6in apart, in a nursery bed and set in their final positions in the fall. They may also be divided.
