Like Gardenia thunbergia, this species has fragrant white blossoms and woody seed pods that remain on the branches. Gardenia thunbergia possibly often confused with Gardenia resiniflua, it may be distinguished from Gummy gardenia, by its much larger fruits.

This gardenia is a true tree, although small size - 8-10 ft tall. The leaves are huge, 12-15' long and 6-7" wide. And so is the flower - 6-7" wide. The flower starts with a creamy light yellow and turns into dark gold a day or two later. Remarkable feature of this plant: on new growth amber-like drops of sap appear.

Gardenia Ululani is a great choice for warm climates such as USDA Zone 10-11. It prefers full sun to light shade and regular waterings. It is drought tolerant once established. It can grow as large shrub or small specimen tree up to 8-10 ft tall and as wide. Ululani is a female name in Hawaii, meaning "heavenly inspiration".

Grown in a pot, Gardenia Ululani can be taken indoors in cold regions. Gardenia is a relatively slow growing plant and requires a rich, well drained soil. Planting it in a pot requires good soil and proper watering. The pot must have good drainage. Avoid overwatering and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer once or twice a month. If placed in a cold area, it should be brought indoors during cold months or provided with protection from wind and frost.

The flowers are large, showy, creamy white and heavily perfumed, particularly at night. They open from elegantly furled creamy-green buds. The corolla is a tube with 8 large lobes. The fruits are hard and woody, and heavily fibrous inside, and can remain on the bush for years. Each fruit is egg-shaped, grayish green, when mature roughly dotted with whitish encrustations. Easy to grow, although it is slow-growing. It does best in slightly acid, light, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter added and regular deep watering. Mulch thickly and regularly. It may need to be pruned to keep it shapely, or in scale with its container. Pruning should be done after flowering or just before the new growth appears. Although it is moderately drought tolerant, drought stress can cause buds to fall before opening. Gardenia thunbergia tolerates a winter minimum 25-30F although young plants will require protection from frost. It looks good as a specimen plant on a lawn, or as part of an informal hedge or shrubbery, or planted beside a pond or a stream. It also makes a good pot plant in a large container, its pale gray bark and angular shape making it an interesting form plant, while the flowers perfume the air. This gardenia is used as a root stock for grafted hybrid varieties thanks to its hardiness and tolerance to wide range of soil and climate conditions. It is also suitable for bonsai.
