Jatropha Buddah Belly, Baseball Plant
Origin: Texas and Mexico
CaudexGroundcover and low-growing 2ftModerate waterDry conditionsOrnamental foliageRed/crimson/vinous flowersIrritatingAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSeaside, salt tolerant plant

A dwarf jatropha with a huge caudex. As is obvious from the photograph it is cultivated mainly for its caudex. Its leaves are deciduous and its flowers, though small, are colorful. The small, round caudex - or swollen trunk - produces many long-lasting spikes of poppy-red flowers from the tips of its short stems in summer. Green, pea-like berries follow. Give it a well-drained soil, very little water and lots of sun. This slow-growing plant likes sun or shade and can rot if it is cold and damp. Maximum plant height or length 6 inches. Minimum temperature is 50F.

Jatropha gossypifolia is similar to J. curcas but the leaf stalks are covered with coarse dark brown hairs and the young leaves are sticky. The capsular fruit contains three tiny brown seeds. All parts are considered toxic but in particular the seeds. Jatropha is an ornamental plant naturalised in many tropical areas. The roots, stems, leaves seeds and fruits of the plant have been widely used in traditional folk medicine in many parts of West Africa.

Jatropha integerrima, Jatropha pandurata, Spicy Jatropha, Coral Plant, Peregrina, Physic Nut

Click to see full-size image Jatropha integerrima, Jatropha pandurata
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Spicy Jatropha, Coral Plant, Peregrina, Physic Nut
Origin: Cuba
Can be used for bonsaiLarge shrub 5-10 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeDry conditionsPink flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersIrritatingAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Peregrina is an evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy leaves and clusters of star shaped bright scarlet flowers. The plant has a rounded or narrow domed form and gets up to 15 ft tall with a spread of 10 ft or so, although in cultivation it is usually smaller. Peregrina often grows shrublike with several slender trunks, but it can be pruned to a single trunk. The leaves are extremely variable; they may be entire and elliptic or oval, or they may be fiddle shaped, or they may have three sharp pointed lobes. They are bronze when young and brownish on the undersides. The flowers are about 1 in across and borne in multi-flowered terminal clusters almost all year round. 'Compacta' is a smaller, more compact cultivar.

Peregrina is tolerant of a wide variety of soils as long as they are well drained. Blooms on the current year's growth so it can be pruned at any time of the year. It handles pruning well and can be kept to shrub size, trained to a tree form or used in espalier. Drought tolerant. Damaged by frost and is considered marginal in zones 9B and 10A.

Peregrina is a spectacular shrub in bloom most of the year. It makes a fine container plant on the patio or at poolside. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Like many of the euphorbs, Jatropha contains a milky sap that can irritate sensitive skin. All parts of the plant are reported to be poisonous if ingested.

Jatropha (Gout plant) is an attention grabber and a must in every tropical garden. It has a large bottle-like caudex and huge leaves up to 10-12 inches in diameter. The more shade, the bigger the leaves. Great natural bonsai. Makes a good potted plant but can also be used as a conversation piece specimen in a small garden. This showy plant grows about 2-3 ft high, with a knobby, swollen stem and red flowers in large terminal clusters. Partial sun and a well-drained soil are preferred. Propagation is by seeds, which are produced freely and germinate easily. When the seeds ripen, they burst open, so watch them to turn brown before you miss them jumping away! Seed pods will explode, launching the seeds several feet away.
