Euphorbia tirucalli, Pencil Bush, Milk-bush, Pencil Tree, Fire Fingers

Click to see full-size image Euphorbia tirucalli
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Pencil Bush, Milk-bush, Pencil Tree, Fire Fingers
Origin: Swaziland
Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterIrritatingSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Succulent and spineless treelets to 20 ft tall; trunk to 16" in diam.; stems and branches green, with milky latex. Leaves soon caducous or leafless, rarely alternate at apex young branchlets in former year. Branched green, rather succulent, cylindrical pencil like stems. The plants are usually leaf less, but for a few small leaves at the tips of the branches; but these leaves fall off soon. This is called the ‘cactoid habit’, due to which the species is often confused with the cacti (Rhipsalis baccifera). A small prick releases milky latex, which is absent in the cacti.

Pencil Tree, Fire Fingers. Very cool succulent plant, branched green, rather succulent, cylindrical pencil like stems. The plants are usually leaf less, but for a few small leaves at the tips of the branches; but these leaves fall off soon. This is called the cactoid habit, due to which the species is often confused with the cacti (Rhipsalis baccifera). A small prick releases milky latex, which is absent in the cacti. In bright light, top of the plant has reddish color, hence the common name Fire Fingers.

Euphorbia tithymaloides, Pedilanthus tithymaloides, Devil's backbone, Zigzag plant, Jacob's ladder

Click to see full-size image Euphorbia tithymaloides, Pedilanthus tithymaloides
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Devil's backbone, Zigzag plant, Jacob's ladder
Origin: Tropical Americas
Large shrub 5-10 ftSmall shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterPink flowersOrnamental foliageIrritatingSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Pedilanthus is very easy to grow as a houseplant. It needs some protection from hot summer sun, but it will be happiest in full sun during the fall and winter. Take care not to over-water, which can cause rotting. Water sparingly, just enough to make the potting mixture moist. Water even more sparingly if the room temperature is below 60 degrees; the temperature should never go below 55 degrees. Liquid fertilizer should be used once a month. Plant in well drained sandy mixture. It does best in a small pot; you can change pots to just one size larger when roots become extremely crowded. The sap is moderately caustic, although mild by Euphorbia standards, it should still be handled with caution.

Acalypha godseffiana, Copper Leaf, Beefsteak Plant, Fire dragon, Jacobs coat, Match-me-if-you-can, Three-seeded Mercury

Click to see full-size image Acalypha godseffiana
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Copper Leaf, Beefsteak Plant, Fire dragon, Jacobs coat, Match-me-if-you-can, Three-seeded Mercury
Origin: Fiji
Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunModerate waterDry conditionsOrnamental foliageSubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeSeaside, salt tolerant plant

A very colorful tropical shrub grown for its attractive reddish leaves. Beautiful foliage of mixed shades of red, yellow and green. Leaves, much smaller than ordinary copperleafs, are orange/red in the full sun and mostly variegated/green in the shade. The more sun the more color the leaves will get. Fast growing. A native of the East Indies and the Pacific, this is one of the most striking foliage shrubs and is widely used by tropical gardeners. Cultivars of A. godseffiana are found in a wide variety of colors: green and white, green and yellow, red, bronze, copper, or brown. The leaves also vary in form, some being flat and others undulating, while the flowers are inconspicuous. In a garden, where they are often used as informal hedges or in massed beds, all Acalypha species require full sun, well-drained soil, and careful pruning to prevent them from becoming leggy. They are easily propagated by cuttings.
