Hedychium gardnerianum very vigorous, producing thick stems which support the large yellow flowers with orange stamens. It prefers a warm climate although it will grow outside in temperate areas that have light, infrequent frosts. Hedychiums thrive on heavy (nutritious) soil. Plants outdoors benefit from a thick winter mulch once the top growth has been removed. It grows to 8 ft tall with long, bright green leaves clasping the tall stems. The very fragrant pale yellow and red flowers are held in dense spikes above the foliage. They appear towards the end of summer.
