The Caudiciform Pachypodium (Pachypodium succulentum) can grow as a small shrub, up to 2-5 feet. However, when grow in containers it will remain small and will rarely exceed more than 12 inches. This succulent species is native to Southern Africa and prefers to grow in full sun to semi-shade in conditions of moderate water. These plants thrive in well-drained soils with ample sunlight in the daytime.

This succulent has beautiful pink flowers that are marked with tiny white to off-white petal tips. These flowers appear in spring and last throughout the summer months. The plant also produces thorns or spines, which can range from short and stout to long and sharp. These spines protect the plant from predation, heat and drought. Its leaves are elongated and have a leathery feel.

In cold regions, this Pachypodium succulentum can be grown in a pot, as long as it receives enough sunlight and is given protection from freezing temperatures, especially during the winter months. The soil should be well-draining but moisture-holding, and should be supplemented with organic matter. The plant should only be watered when the topsoil is dry and the water should be limited during the winter months. Fertilizer should be applied sparingly and the container should be placed in a location where it will receive enough sunlight. This succulent can be easily propagated from seeds and cuttings.

This species of Pachypodium is not hardy and must be grown in zones 9-11 for optimal growth. It is an ideal choice for gardens and landscapes, and also makes a great addition to potted arrangements. This succulent can brighten up any space and is sure to bring a bit of life and color to any environment.
