Hamelia cuprea, commonly known as Bahama Firebush, is a deciduous plant that is native in the Central and South American tropics. It is a large shrub, typically growing 5-10 feet tall. In some cases, it can become a small tree, reaching heights of 10-20 feet. This sturdy tree loves to be in full sun and needs regular waterings. During the growing season, it is showered with yellow and orange flowers that are sure to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

As a mature plant, it is cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time. It is best grown in USDA Zones 8-11. In cold regions where you want to grow it in containers, be sure to give it extra protection during winter months. Make sure you choose a container large enough to accommodate the long roots and insulate it with a thick layer of mulch or straw.

In the garden, its lush foliage creates a backdrop for the clusters of flowers. It can be used as a privacy hedge as it can reach heights of up to 20 feet. Pruning it regularly will help it branch outwards, and it will flower even more. This plant is a great choice if you are looking for a multi-season tropical feel to your garden.
