Singapore plumeria (obtusa) - evergreen shrub or small tree, up to 15 feet tall (4.5 m), or more; dark, shiny, leathery, blunt ended leaves, 6 to 10 inches long (15-25 cm), needs protection below 40° F (4° C). It has has scented, creamy white flowers with a yellow center, 1.6 to 2 inches in diameter (4-5 cm). This small tree grows to 8m high and is best suited to a tropical climate where, unlike most frangipanis, it is reliably evergreen. It can be grown in frost-free, subtropical climates, but requires a sheltered position and a fairly constant water supply. The broad, blunt-ended leaves are 15cm or more long. The scented, creamy white flowers have a bright yellow center. with its elegant, rounded flowers and soft perfume, 'Singapore White' is one of the loveliest of all plumerias. Plumeria commemorates Charles Plumier, a seventeenth-century French botanist who described several tropical species. The genus contains 8 species of mainly deciduous shrubs and trees, originally from Central America, known for their strongly fragrant flowers. The tree can reach a height of 9m, though they are generally much smaller. Their fleshy branches contain a poisonous, milk sap. In the tropics, the terminally held flowers (generally white) appear before the leaves and continue to flower for most of the year. In subtropical climates the flowers appear in spring, after the leaves, and continue growing until the next winter. The fruit consist of 2 leathery follicles, although the trees rarely fruit in cultivation. Most plumerias in gardens are hybrids. Plumerias are very salt tolerant. See Thai Plumeria - varieties Gallery.

Family: Apocynaceae
USDA Zone: 9-12?
USDA Plant Hardiness MapLarge shrub 5-10 ft tallSmall tree 10-20 ftSemi-shadeFull sunModerate waterWhite, off-white flowersPlant attracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Beautiful rare species of plumeria, a real eye-stopper! Perfect accent plant for small yard or patio, this plant blooms year-round, almost non-stop. This plumeria is evergreen, never drops leaves, and looks very tropical and ornamental even in short periods when it doesn't have flowers (in Florida it usually "rests" in December-January). Large clusters of bright white 3" flowers with small yellow centers cover this tree as a beautiful bouquet, hence the common name. Growth habit: medium sized tree with profuse branching, growth is rapid and upright. Leaves are dark green and unique fiddle-shaped, or spoon-shaped. Can be planted in ground in zones 9-11, or cultivated as a potting culture. This plant is very easy to grow, and unlike other plumerias, it doesnt get insect or fungus problems. Somewhat drought tolerant and doesnt require any special care. Tolerates light shade. See Thai Plumeria - varieties Gallery.

The fruit consist of 2 leathery follicles, althought the trees rarely fruit in cultivation. Most plumerias in gardens are hybrids.Although Plumerias are about as easy to grow as they come, the one thing they don't particularly like is to be overwatered. Your Plumeria comes in a specially designed soil which allows for excellent drainage, so any soil mix you purchase should do likewise. Water approximately once a week, or when you can see the soil is light, i.e., dry. Soak thoroughly so that water is running out the bottom drain holes. If you miss a watering, not to worry, Plumerias are incredibly tolerant of being dry. Plumerias are very salt tolerant.

USDA Zone: 9-12?
USDA Plant Hardiness MapPlant used for bonsaiLarge shrub 5-10 ft tallSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunModerate waterWhite, off-white flowersThorny or spinyDeciduous plantFragrant plant

Plumeria tuberculata is a fast-growing, large shrub or small tree that can reach heights of five to ten feet tall. It has a beautiful, rough trunk with white to off-white, fragrant flowers that appear in the summer and last until frost. If pollinated, the flowers will produce fruit in the shape of a bean pod.

Plumeria is a tropical plant that loves full sun and moderate water, although they are drought tolerant once established. It prefers rich, well-draining soil and benefits from regular applications of fertilizer. While this variety is not considered to be thorny or spiny, many varieties are and should be placed away from walkways and patios.

This deciduous plant is cold hardy, at least to 30°F for short periods of time, and is USDA zone hardy from 9-12. In colder regions, Plumeria can be grown in pots and brought in for the winter, or planted in the ground and protected from frost. While potted, Plumeria must be in full sun and given plenty of water during the longer days of summer. In autumn, water should be cut down and the plant should be moved indoors when necessary. Careful watering be done throughout the wintertime.
