We recommend plastic pots for growing our plants. They are easy to care, and the root ball won't get too dry when it's too hot. Since you are going to use a special potting soil that provides a good drainage, you don't need a clay pot. Plastic pot is good when you need to re-pot your plant in bigger size: the root ball pulls out easily. We offer 6" diameter green plastic pots, about 3/4 gallon size. These pots are perfect for planting our plants grown originally in 4" pots. If you bought 4" pot size plant, this is a good next size for it. |

It is very tempting to buy a 98-cent 2 qf bag of top soil in garden center, but it will definitely kill your expensive exotic plant. Tropical plants require a special soil for successful growing. In the Nature, most of them grow in conditions of rainforest, in a loose, porous medium contained of bark and light organic matter. This medium provides good drainage which is a must for healthy roots. TopTropicals professional potting mix is a very close substitute for natural medium. This is a soilless mix that includes also a professional kind of slow-release fertilizer with micro-elements (active for 3-4 months) and is ready to use.

3. Professional Potting Mix Components
If you are an experienced gardener, you may want to make up your own potting
mix, based on peat moss or coconut fiber. The proportions of your custom-made
mix will depend on what special conditions you want to create for your plants.
For example, some plants prefer more moist medium (Hibiscus,
Colocasia),
others like to be on a dry side and need better drainage (epiphytes, succulents).
Peat moss is available in most garden centers, so we offer only those components
that you can hardly find in your local retail stores.
