* *MORPHOLOGY: what are the names for the different parts of the plant? How
do we describe the differing shapes of these parts? How does
knowing these names & descriptions help us tell one plant from another?
How does this help us know what kind of care a plant needs & where it
is best to plant it?
* PHYSIOLOGY: Different plant parts function like our various organs. What parts of the plant carry out the tasks that keep plants alive & reproducing? How do we take advantage of these functions in plant care & propagation?
* PLANT NUTRITION: Plants, like people, need a varied diet. Plants need sunlight, water, & both major & minor nutritional elements. These nutritional needs vary by the age & type of plant & its reproductive state.
* BASIC BUGS: Some insects are harmful to plants in varying degrees. Learning
to differentiate one from the other & apply control methods which
maximize efficacy & minimize side effects will prevent you from getting
onto an expensive roller coaster of pest control.
* BASIC DISEASE: some plant diseases are obvious, just as a rash is visible
on a person. Others merely produce symptoms, analogous to fever or
fatigue. Just as different human diseases, which can produce similar symptoms,
must be treated differently, plant diseases must be correctly
diagnosed to be effectively treated.
