Bael, Bengal quince, Indian bael, Wood apple, Matoom. The offering of bael leaves is a compulsory ritual of the worship of Lord Shiva in the hills. Amorphophallus konjac is one of the largest flowers, a perennial exotic Asian plant. It grows a single, elongated center called a corm and a single large leaf that wraps around it. The corm is the part of the plant that is used, as well as its tuber, which is commonly called the konnyaku potato. It is one of the most exotic, bizarre flowers. Can be easily grown in a pot as a house plant. The single leaf dormant in winter, then in spring the plant shoots out a fantastic flower. See picture of a flowering plant.

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius - Corpse flower

large shrub 5-10 ftsmall shrub 2-5 ftshadesemi-shaderegular waterpink flowersUnusual colorornamental foliagered/crimson/vinous flowerssubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

Voodoo lily, Corpse flower, Elephant foot yam. Amorphophallus paeoniifolius is perhaps one of the ugliest flowers (inflorescence) in the world and to accompany it, it has one of the worst scents that you can imagine. It's hard to get close to the flower when it's releasing its perfume. Fortunately, the foul odor only lasts for a few hours after the flower opens. The plant only blooms when mature and even so it doesn't bloom every year. Flowers last only about 5 days. Even more interesting, during this phase the plant generates heat which can be felt if you have the guts to stick your hand inside the inflorescence. The heat and the smell mimics an animal that has recently died to attract the flies that will pollinate the flower.
Amorphophallus will go dormant in the winter. When dormant, don't give it too much water, let the soil dry out. Keep it dry for a couple of weeks and then water it again. Don't fertilize. Repeat this process until the tuber wakes up in the spring. At that time you can start watering regularly and fertilizing the plant.
In the spring, if the plant is mature enough, you will see the flowers, otherwise a leaf will sprout.

Annona sp. - Golden Sugar Apple, Pineapple Annona

small tree 10-20 ftfull sunregular waterediblesubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeFlood tolerant

This rare Annona is a species originally brought to us from Costa Rica. We believe it to be a natural hybrid between A. muricata and A. glabra.
It is a very ornamental, evergreen, small to medium size tree with waxy, large 4-6" leaves, similar to A. muricata, A. montana or Rollinia. Fast growing, forms nice bushy specimen. It has a large, up to 1 lb fruit, green when unripe, turning dark yellow to orange on ripening. The pulp is golden to orange when ripe, with strong Pineapple scent, and resembling Jackfruit in texture. Flavor is like the custard apple but with pineapple, papaya, apricot and melon overtones. Seems to tolerate flooding. It is also cold hardy at least to upper 20's for a few hours. 3 year old trees survived several nights with frost with hardly any leaf damage. The plant would be very interesting for rare fruit collectors as it offers a large, exotic fruit of unusual color and taste, and appears to be much more hardy and water tolerant than similar looking but sensitive A. muricata, A. montana and Rollinia.
Propagation is by seed, which are grayish to light brown. If stored for several months, seeds may take up to six months to sprout. Trees produce after three to four years from seed.

large shrub 5-10 ftsmall shrub 2-5 ftfull sunshadesemi-shaderegular waterpink flowersred/crimson/vinous flowersattracts butterflies, hummingbirdssubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short time

This is a new introduction, quite unique flowering plant from S America. Like all aphelandras, it has showy flowers that are loved by hummingbirds. The flowers of this variety are bright pink, up to 2 inch long, and tubular. They are 2-lipped, fuzzy and they bloom for one day before wilting. The A. scabra inflorescence is candle-like and the prepubescent flower spikes can grow up to 6 inch in height. The inflorescence has overlapping green bracts that are tinged with yellow and orange and they have extrafloral nectaries. Each day only one or two flowers open along the inflorescence to prevent self-pollination.
It is a great addition to a collectible tropical butterfly garden. Can grow into 4-5" tall bushy specimen. Blooms sporadically during warm season. Tolerates both full sun or filtered light.
