Refer to pictures for better identification of this plant. Cabelluda is a large shrub or small tree, 10 to 24 feet in height, with multiple thin trunks. The young stems and leaves are pubescent. Leaves are dark green, opposite. Small white flowers are perfect and occur in axillary clusters. Fruits are round, yellow and pubescent, about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, with one or two seeds. They are sweet and aromatic, with a flavor similar to apricot. Cabelluda is propagated by seed. Fruiting occurs in 2-3 years, when the tree is as small as 3 feet (1 m) tall. Cabelluda grows best in moist, fertile soils, and fruits well in full sun as well as partial shade. It is cold tolerant, surviving temperatures as low as 27F(-3C). |
