Synsepalum dulcificum, Miracle Fruit
  Synsepalum dulcificum
Family: Sapotaceae
Miracle Fruit
Origin: Ghana
large shrub 5-10 ftfull sunregular waterethnomedicaledibleincuded in CD catalog
This is an oval to pyramidal shaped bush. Simple, alternate 3-5 leaves clustered at branch tips. At maturity it will reach seven feet. Inconspicuous, brown 1/2 in flowers. Red, 1 in football-shaped fruit, sweet, pleasant tasting. It fruits when only 1 ft tall. Miracle fruit produces small red fruits several times each year. The “miracle” is that if lemon or other sour fruit is eaten after the miracle fruit, the sour fruit tastes sweet. A natural chemical in the fruit masks the tongue’s sour taste buds so that lemons taste like lemonade or lemon pie, or lemon candy. The fruit has a unique glyco protein that inhibits tastebuds' perception of sour taste for half an hour to a couple of hours. Enhances flavor of grapefruit, strawberries, and makes beer taste like a malta soft drink. Has been used as an appetite stimulant for persons taking chemotherapy medicines. Freezes whole for preservation. Prefers acid soil such as Canadian Peat Moss, minor nutrients. Seed to fruit in 2 to 5 years. Flower to fruit in 30 to 45 days The sweet sensation lasts from 20 minutes to 4 hours. Miracle fruit must have acid soil, is frost sensitive, and requires partial shade. It is an excellent choice for a containerized tree, which gives it the added benefit of mobility. Fill a container with a 50:50 mix of peat moss and perlite; this combination will create an acidic environment with good drainage.

Last summer a Sugar Apple, Miracle Fruit and a Cattley Guava arrived from Florida. My favorite of the bunch was the miracle fruit. I was overjoyed to add this plant to my collection of around fifteen tropical fruit trees! (I had in my greenhouse 2 Carambola trees, a Cattley Guava, Surinam Cherry, lime, 2 Meyer lemons, Mamey Sapote, Passion Fruit-vine, Mandarin Orange, Calamondin Orange, Cacao, Guava, 2 Macadamia trees, one Oroblanco Grapefruit, and a Dragon Fruit). The miracle fruit is not to fussy about its growing conditions. It needs full sun, good drainage, and a frost free climate. I did have some problems with scale insects, but a spray of a bit of rubbing alcohol, some soap and alot of water will rid you of these pests. I was away from my house for several weeks and didn't water any of my trees. When I returned my Mamey Sapote and my Guava were wilting. But, amazingly the miracle fruit was alive and FLOWERING!!!

This is an easy to grow, pest free bush that produces small cherry like fruit. I have had one growing for several years.
Gently chew the flesh off the seed, swish around in your mouth for about a minute, then take a bite out of a sour citrus. Everything is amazingly sweet. It is now used in the health care field. Look up on the internet for the lengthy details.

Its been about 6 months and it grows really slow. I ordered the 1 gal but it came very small and not at all ready to bear fruit. In fact its living well but its still only about 7 inches and not close to bearing fruit. Sucks but i blame myself since im not sure how to grow plats too well. I baby this thing hoping that i can learn from it.

Still waiting but optimistic.

I ordered my 1 gallon Miracle Fruit plant from Top Tropicals in May and it's at least doubled in size since then. I mist it every couple days and kept it on an open, east facing porch over the summer. It's been in the kitchen in front of a south facing window since then. I use tap water, and once a month I completely wash it out by pouring a gallon of water into the pot and letting drain... otherwise I water as usual, not letting the soil completely dry out on top. I posted the picture 'May - November' above. If someone could contact me on how to take cuttings, I'd love to grow more!

It is so dry here in California that I put my miracle fruit plant inside a 15 gallon pot of coco coir and covered it with a small zippered portable greenhouse [to work as a humidity dome] and I keep it in my greenhouse. This barely provides enough humidity! I NEVER fertilize. I mist the plant all the time and use diluted alcohol to take care of the mealy bugs that love this plant. It seems to like afternoon shade.
The seeds sprout easily in high humidity and are extremely slow growing. Do not fertilize them.

The bright red drupes taste like a cherry strawberry combo with honey on it. Swish the flesh all around in your mouth. Then eat some citrus. Grapefruit becomes the most delicious fruit you have ever eaten. Completely sweet and free of bitter. Everyone agrees this is amazing.
Lemons and limes are sweet beyod belief.

We always have lots of leaves that are partially dried up. Don't know why, but it doesn't stop the 3 or 4 fruiting flushes each year. This really is a plant worth growing.
