Cattley guava is hardier than the common guava and can survive temperatures as low as 22 °F (-5 °C). It can succeed wherever the orange is grown without artificial heating. The yellow variety is tenderer and its climatic requirements are similar to those of the lemon. Both kinds flourish in full sun, but the red form is much tastier in winter time. The cattley guava does well in limestone and poor soils that would barely support other fruit trees. It is shallow- rooted but the red type is fairly drought tolerant. It is able to endure flooding for short periods.Red-skinned fruits have white flesh more or less reddish near the skin. Yellow-skinned fruits have faintly yellowish flesh. You can buy a guava or grow it from the pit. The hard pits must he clean of the fleshy fruit, so after eating wash the pit in warm water and get it started right away. Cover the pit with about 1/4 inch of soil and keep it in a warm, bright place. The first shoots should appear in two to four weeks,if not, try again with fresh pits. The tree grows in an upright manner and can be pruned and trimmed without harm. Read more - Article about Guava.

I ordered a cattley guava plant from Florida three years ago. When I received it in the spring the plant was about two feet tall and as wide, bushy and the leaves glossy. Since then the plant has been in several areas of my house. First it was in my dining room with artificial light (75 watts) and no extra humidity. It did fine, but was slow growing. Last fall I bought $2.00 painters plastic and made a make-shift greenhouse. Since then the red cattley guava has grown to over four feet wide and three feet tall (I always trim it to keep it bushy). It has flowered once, but they fell off. The plant must be at a certain age to fruit in containers. I recommend this plant for anyone who likes a practically care-free plant that will EVENTUALLY fruit!

Update: During the early to mid-fall (October-November 2009) my strawberry guava flowered. Right now, as I am typing the fruit, about five of them are ripening. I have already eaten three of them; they are delicious!!!

Bought a house in August 2008 and it's full of trees, plants, etc. Now that spring is here we're amazed at all the wonderful plants/trees we have. Most recent discovery was a little shrub like tree we were going to cut down, but waited to spring to see what it was, it's a Strawberry Guava. Some of our wonderful finds, grapefruit, lemon, lime, orange, satsuma, 3 sweet olive trees, 5 angel's trumpet, japanese persimmon, guava, 2 grape vines, japanese magnolias, banana shrub (something we were looking to get before the discovery) and numberous other wonderful things in addition to numerous herbs growing like crazy (various mints everywhere). Can't wait to see how this Strawberry Guava works out

Costa Rican Guava, Cas Guava. Yellow fruit, 1-3" around, similar to the common guava but often very acidic. Growth habit is similar to the regular cattley guava. The cas guava is sometimes thought to be not as hardy as the tropical guava however mature trees seem capable of withstanding short frosts.
Usually used to make jams, jellies, and preserves, or as a flavoring for drinks. The fruit is very acidic so it is generally not eaten fresh out of hand.
