Pouteria sapota, Mamey, Mamey Sapote
  Pouteria sapota
Family: Sapotaceae
Mamey, Mamey Sapote
Origin: Central America
big treefull sunmoderate waterdeciduousediblesubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeincuded in CD catalog
large-leaved, spreading, large tree from Central America, it is considered by Cubans to produce the best fruit in the world. This egg-shaped fruit is 3-6" long (some varieties are larger) with a brown, scruffy surface. A woody cover encloses the pulp and 1-2 large seed. The flesh is fine and reddish, sweet in some varieties and insipid in others. The fruit is picked when the layer under the skin is brown (not green), but the fruit is still hard. It is used fresh, in milk shakes and ice cream. Cold tender when young, it attains more hardiness as it ages. Tree loses its leaves around mid April. At that time fruit can be easily counted - both that year's crop and the next as well. Varieties: Pantin (Key West), Magaa, Pace, FloridaHandsome, open tree, 12 x 4 leaves clustered at tips. Excellent flavor, Cuban favorite. Fruit has rough, brown skin, red to orange pulp.

I purchased a four foot Mamey Sapote tree from Florida last fall (before the nightly temperatures dipped below 45 degrees). It was flowering, but they fell off because of the stress is received during shipment. The Mamey Sapote tree adapted well to my indoor greenhouse conditions, eventhough it had to endure a drought and lost all of its leaves. Since then it has flourished and it now sits on my deck to enjoy the warm spring weather. I will probably have to bring the tree inside for one night when we expect the temperature to drop to 45 degrees. After all, the Mamey Sapote is tropical/ultra tropical and can not handle cool conditions for long. It is also now flowering!!! I'm waiting to see how the tree does.
