I bought a 1 gallon hiptage in fall 06 and planted it here in Phoenix. It did great that winter and then the following summer once it was in the ground, though it did need regular deep watering. It died down to the roots during our Jan 07 freeze. I decided to pull up the trunk in March only to find it had resprouted at the base. My bad. I tried to save it, but I ripped up the roots pretty good, so it didn't make it. I had to order another one it was so nice.

Pretty fast growing, with tough leaves and very fragrant nickel-sized flowers. You have to get pretty close to smell them here in the low humidity, but they are worth stepping up to. Not overly showy, but the triangular seed clusters are neat.

Its growth habit is more shrubby than vining, kind of like the pink powder puff calliandra, or like a combretum.

The 3 gallon size plant I ordered this spring arrived in great condition (this plant seems to travel pretty well) and had new growth, flowers, and seed heads.
