This tree is hardier than is commonly realized. A large tree has been on the Lander University Campus for many years and several younger trees are located in the surrounding area in Greenwood. As Grounds Superintendent of the University for over 15 years, I often showed this tree to visitors and commented on it's survival for many years including several episodes of temperatures below 10 degrees Farenheit. It's seeds and leaves were sometimes collected by high school students who wanted a unique or unusual tree for their biology classes.
