Couroupita guianensis, Cannonball Tree
  Couroupita guianensis
Family: Lecythidaceae
Cannonball Tree
Origin: Tropical South America
big treefull sunsemi-shademoderate waterred/crimson/vinous flowerssubtropical, cold hardy at least to 30s F for a short timeincuded in CD catalog
It is popular in botanic gardens and a few larger private gardens because of its bizarre fruit. It is a very tall tree which sheds its large, elliptical leaves several times a year. The pinkish-red flowers grow directly from the trunk near the base of the crown and are strongly scented in the evening. Blooms year round. Flowers are followed by large, globular fruit, reddish-brown in colour, which do indeed resemble cannonballs and remain on the tree for many months. On older trees there may be dozens of fruits and flower clusters at the same time.

Flower is sacred to Hindus that worship God Shiva
because the shape of pollen containing pert resembles snakehood and the center projection looks like Shivlingam-Just loke snakehood shading the shivlingam.Hence it is called Nagalingam tree. Flowers are beautiful with a lovely perfume but they do not have nectar. Bees pollinate the flower and lid type flower falls offleaving the center on tree. The central projection develops in a small hard ball like fruit containing seeds inside. Not a good idea to stand under the tree as these balls hurt badly if they fall on you. Tree is often found in the compounds of Shiva temples in India, specially in south.Growing in Fruit and Spice park of south Florida.
