Family: Asclepiadaceae
Araujia
Origin: South America

A bold and distinct twining evergreen climber or robust twining shrub having racemes of fragrant white or pink flowers with flat spreading terminal petals that trap nocturnal moths and hold them until dawn. Flowers all summer. The foliage is a light grey green and the plant can be kept back by pruning. After a long hot summer, large green pod like curious fruits are carried. Sometimes referred to as the cruel plant due to the moths that pollinate it being held onto by the flowers and only being released the following day. Only suitable for sunny spots in warmer counties or conservatory where the scent is more noticeable.

I have grown araujia from seed both in a greenhouse and outside. Both have flowered and produced viable seeds. In the greenhouse the flowers have a quite noticeable scent. The outside plant climbed up a drain pipe to about 5 m, and whilst most of it died back during winter, the roots survived and produced more shoots the following year. I have photos of this interesting plant showing both flowers and seed pods.
The seed originally came from garden centre in Costa Brava, Spain, whilst on holiday there.

This plant is HORRIBLE!!! It is impossible to get rid of, it climbs all over the fruit trees andin general is very distructive. Please think before you bring non native plants into an area.
