Florida Special is a classic Florida-bred pineapple developed by the Libby fruit company for commercial production. At one time, over 240 acres were planted in Immokalee, Florida, making this variety a real piece of Florida pineapple history before Libby later sold to Nestle.
This variety produces golden-fleshed fruit with excellent, well-balanced flavor - sweet, juicy, and low in fiber. The plant is compact and attractive, forming a low rosette of spiky leaves, which makes it ideal for containers, patios, or small garden spaces. Under warm conditions, it typically fruits within 12-18 months.
One of its standout traits is its resilience. Ripening fruit has shown the ability to tolerate drops into the mid-30s°F without internal damage, which is a valuable advantage in Florida's unpredictable winter weather.
Grow in full sun for best fruiting and use fast-draining soil, since pineapples do not like sitting wet. Water lightly and allow the soil to dry between watering. Protect from frost and prolonged cold.
