The genus Scutellaria has approximately 300 species, which includes annuals, herbaceous perennials, and subshrubs. This genus is cosmopolitan with representatives all around the world. The name comes from the Latin word scutella, a small dish or saucer, describing the calyx in the fruiting stage.
