Pelagodoxa henryana is a rare palm from Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands reportedly growing in dense rain forest about 135 in above sea level in a humid valley. It is rare in the wild but increasingly popular in botanic gardens and specialist palm collections. It has undivided leaves that can be torn by the wind in exposed locations. The leaf undersides have a whitish color, and the distinctive fruits are round and bumpy. Pelagodoxa is difficult to grow in South Florida, where it is susceptible to cold temperatures, dry wind, and excessive heat and humidity. It is easy to grow under glass in controlled temperature and moisture conditions.
