Pachypodium saundersii is a small shrub native to South Africa, which typically reaches a height of 2-5 feet as a mature plant. It is notable for its deciduous nature, and reduces its leaves and becomes dormant during the cooler winter months. This plant is characterized by its thorny or spiny branches and its neat grey-green foliage. In the summertime, this is beautifully offset by the delight of its pink or white and off-white flowers, which appear at just the right time to add stunning contrast to its background.

In warm climates, its growing conditions are not particularly difficult, provided it is given adequate sunlight and regular water through the growing season. In colder climates, another option is to grow this plant in a pot that can be brought indoors during the colder months. Its mature plant is cold hardy down to at least 30 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods of times, so it is possible for it to be grown in USDA Zones 9-11 with the right protective precautions in place. It should be allowed to dry out in between waterings. Can be grown indoors, as well as in a climate-controlled environment, but it does require bright light and does best if planted in full sun

When it comes to its care, Pachypodium saundersii requires little in terms of additional nutrients beyond what would normally be supplied as part of normal soil during its growth period. A mild liquid fertilizer every few months is usually sufficient to provide it with the extra nutrients and minerals it needs, while also protecting its health. In winter when leaves are reducing, water should be reduced, and if the temperature drops dangerously low, the pot can be moved inside, or a protective covering placed over it.
