A large shrub to small tree, hardy to zone 9. The pretty pink flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs).

The plant prefers light sandy, medium loamy and heavy clay soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic soils. It can grow in semi-shade, light woodland or no shade. It requires moist soil. Succeeds in most soils.

The fruit is about the size of a pea. The fruit are edible raw or cooked, a pleasant acid taste.
