Geum sp. plants are easy to grow and maintain, though they do need to be sheltered from harsh winter winds. Plant the Avens in a sunny or partly shady site in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. The plants can survive in USDA zones 3-9

When growing Geum sp. in pots, use a potting mix that is well-draining. Place the pot in a location that receives full sun or partial sun and water it deeply when the soil is dry. In cold regions, watering should be reduced in winter, but some water is still needed. Fertilize the plant with a slow-release fertilizer two or three times per year.

Geum sp. not only adds beauty to the garden with its bright and colorful flowers, but also provides a habitat for pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. The small plants reach a height of 2-5 feet and with proper care and maintenance, can thrive in both sunny and shady locations.
