The flowers from this tree are used to make the world's most expensive perfume 'Joy'. The extremely aromatic orange blooms appear nearly all year round. Grows to the size of a large shrub or small tree, 15-20' in height. It is a tropical tree, however established plants can tolerate light freeze. Yellow Champaca is much more cold tolerant than var. Alba.

People did not invent JOY perfume, Nature made this creation leading to the development of JOY, the most expensive perfume fragrance in the world. Michelia flowers produce in great quantities. On a warm humid night, the scents can easily be enjoyed several hundred feet away. If you drive near by, you will notice the scent immediately. People and every insect you can imagine are attracted to the blooms. These are flowers you don't have to "stick your nose in" as the scent exudes from the tree. However, you really can't STOP sticking your nose into a flower over and over again. Nectar insects appear frantic, driven like drug addicts, bashing into each other to get to the heart of every flower on the tree. Planting a Michelia tree either indoors as bonsai or in your backyard really makes your home a sweet home. Also you could take the flower, home made natural perfume, into car, office, rest room, and anywhere you want fragrant atmosphere. One oriental custom is to use the white flowers as sweet scented decoration, such as hair-pin-flower for girls, and chest-pin-flower for ladies. The tree has flowers and green leaves all year round, beautifying its surroundings. Besides, the clearly veined leaf can be made into a special bookmark. M. Champaka are much more hardier plants than M. Alba and the flower has a sweet fragnance. The M. Alba has root stock of champaka. If you will but forth the effort in taken care of the plant, you will be rewarded many times over via the fragrance. The smell is heavenly.

Rare michelia with cream to pastel orange/yellow (or light orange) flowers, highly fragrant. A new Thai hybrid with large and wide petals is called Champee Si Nuan. The flowers resemble those of Magnolia champaca, but more pastel color and much bigger size. The size of the flower can reach 5-6" wide. Flowers turn darker color with age, almost brown before they drop. Fragrance is very strong. Blooms almost year-round. Plant this nice small specimen tree near a driveway or in any other place with walk traffic where the fragrance can be appreciated. Similar looking magnolia hybrid is M. champaca X M. ballonii.

A hybrid Magnolia champaca x rajaniana Dwarf (Champee Si Nuan) is a dwarf that produces flowers earlier than other Champacas. It is the most exciting hybrid of Champaca, a very reliable bloomer. Flowers of pastel orange to cream color can be large size, in favorable conditions up to 5-6" wide (see picture), very fragrant. The Champee Si Nuan grows into somewhat smaller tree (15-20 ft) and is a perfect variety for potting culture or a small yard.

This is hybrid between Michelia Champaca and Magnolia Montana with sweet strong fragrance of flowers resembles juicyfruit gum. The fragrance is released in the early morning hours and lasts all day long, especially strong at night. Its name honors Florentine botanist Pietro Antonio Micheli. Michelia alba is now cultivated for ornamental purposes in most tropical and lower subtropical countries. Michelia alba has good antimicrobial properties, especially the leaves. It also has an antioxidant character with moderate effect.

Magnolia sirindhorniae

Magnolia
Family: Magnoliaceae
Origin: SE Asia
USDA Zone: 9-11?
USDA Plant Hardiness MapSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunRegular waterWhite, off-white flowersFragrant plant

This is one of the hardiest tropical magnolias. It is very similar to the popular Magnolia x Alba, although it is much more cold tolerant. If you have cool winters, this species is a better choice than magnolia x Alba which is somewhat cold sensitive. Flower has 3" long and narrow petals, off-white to light cream/ivory in color. Fragrance is very strong. The plant growth habit is somewhat similar to Magnolia champaca, but it is much faster growing and more vigorous plant. Similar-looking flowers: Magnolia baillonii (Michelia baillonii). Leaves of this species have rounded tips, unlike some other related magnolias (M. Alba, M. champaca) which are normally pointed.

A very rare handsome tropical tree with large white fragrant flowers of unusual shape. This tree can be (and should be) kept in container where it grows up to 7-8 ft, stays compact and bushy. The fragrance of flowers is outstanding. Not many people know about this tree because it's very rare, while it is as great as famous Perfume trees (Michelia champaca and Cananga odorata). It blooms especially in summer and after drought period. Nice specimen tree for small gardens. It has a multi-layered canopy, blooms mostly from mid-April to late Winter. When in full bloom, perfume fills the area with a soft, musky sweetness. A massive rofusion of flowers decks the branches, pure white against lacquered, dark green leaves, and carpets the ground with fallen blossoms. Grows well in full sun (if not too hot), as well as in semi-shade, tolerates shade, too, in shade it's glossy leaves become large and dark green. Very ornamental! The tree can even tolerate a little sea spray. Seed pods are golden in color, about 4 inches long, horn-shaped, often in pairs.

See Article 1 about Stemmadenia and Article 2 about Stemmadenia .

NOTE: Sometimes Stemmadenia develops on the undersides of leaves tiny granules looking like white sand grain or sugar crystals. They are harmless and nothing more than polysaccharides. Read more info about Stemmadenia.
